It at takes literally 4 or 5 weeks of soaking used hydroton is frequently changed water to remove all the nutrients they soak up in just one grow. So really both your proffered choices suck. Think inert and very well draining.

Yes, I get soil in my hydro system, but flush the system after a couple of days and then at 10 days. This gets all of the 'dirty' water out the the system. This seems to have solved the PH problem. Now I am now using a mixture of hydroton (25%) and higromite ( 75% Here is a link to their site) .
